Since gaining independence in 1956, Sudan has been the site of two civil wars (1955-1972, 1982-2004). The second war and famine related effects uprooted four million people and claimed two million lives. Conflict in Darfur displaced another two million people and caused 200,000 to 400,000 deaths. Key development indicators in Southern Sudan and Darfur are among the worst in the world.
Despite this dismal history, Archbishop Daniel Deng Bul Yak of the Episcopal Church of the Sudan (ECS) casts a vision for a new Sudan as "a country where our children live in peace, a country where we respect the rights of all ethnicities, a country without racism, hatred, tribalism, or prejudice." By preaching and teaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the Church transforms attitudes, strengthens families, and builds community. By rendering education, healthcare, and vocational training, the Church will help create a peaceful, prosperous, self-sustaining society.

The ECS needs organizational restructuring and capacity building to realize this vision. Their charge cannot be accomplished without the expertise, dedicated service, and financial investment of trusted partners. We, the worldwide partners of the ECS, offer our prayers, our time, our talents, and our resources to the Church.![]() |
